Fishing for something to do with your children? This event is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2009 starting at 10 am and is over at 2 pm with the awards ceremony at 2:30pm. Lunch will be provided to all of the registered youngsters. There will be games galore and awards too . The way to win is to just show up. This event is free of charge to all children ages 0-16 who participate and their adult assistant. This event will expose youngsters under the age of 16 to the excitement of fishing in a fun , educational and safe, family oriented environment. Now there is nothing fishy about any of that.

We are going to attempt to try something a little different this year by having a Children’s Fishing Competition and Celebration.
Our mission is to Educate, Protect/Preserve, and Enhance our environment and love of fishing.

Educate our junior anglers on just how fragile our waters and sea life are through educational signs and educating by example. The Choices we make today can impact generations to come.

Protect/Preserve by making catch and release a religion, not just a practice and returning all unwanted fish back to the water alive including sharks and skates. Each sea creature has a purpose to its environment and insuring its species’s survival in the circle of life is essential. By using bronze hooks and other methods to reduce damage to fish and all other sea creatures, anglers can help ensure their survival.

Enhance our environment through cleanups and beach renourishments in addition to working with other environmental and marine life groups to address pollution and other issues that impact our fish and waters.

As is true with so many volunteer events we are looking for Sponsors. Donations of merchandise and or money is always appreciated. We would like to be able to offer all our youngsters who participate a prize and our winners Savings bonds so that they might be able to use it for their future education. Your contribution will help ensure the success of our endeavor so that we might continue offering this wonderful fun day to all the children visiting and from our community. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Volunteers will also be needed to supervise about, answer questions, cut bait, teach fishing basics such as casting, knot tying and fish identification.

If you feel that you can help us in our mission please contact me. I can be reached via phone at the Surf City Ocean Pier at (910) 328-3521 or via e-mail at pier_witch@yahoo.com.

6/30....Good new boys and girls....they are actually catching some blues and spanish.....I walked out about 11:30 this morning and a nice school of spanish was moving through....and looks like they caught some early on also.....lots of bait running in the water....as I write this we have 3 kings in the cooler and have lost one at the gaff and I know of 2 others that were hit but didn't take.....so there is finally some activity out there....still seeing a few spots and small mullet after dark....if I get a chance later I will give you a final king count.... I will download pictures after dark so I can do them all at once incase there are more kings caught today....

Both of the kids have Kings on....one is lost at the Gaff.....Indie lands his 15 lb'er .....Garrison and Edwin rush to get a bait back in the water.....kings are hitting everywhere.....cant you just hear the reels scream.......

Ok we ended up with 10 kings on the deck the largest was Garrison's weighing in at 18 lbs and Congrats to Jay and Indie for limiting out.....time to work on the pictures...

The weekend and the Children's Competition was great lots of children showed up ....143 to be exact.....there were a few kinks to work on but things really went pretty well....we have gotten alot of positive feedback and a great deal of Thank You....its us who should Thank You for your patience and participation...you helped us make it a success.....I do believe all fish were represented this past weekend ......lots of bait in the water .....lots of fish caught.....and a decent run of spots to go with it.....

During the day is still a hit and miss....a few spanish and blues.....and one of these and maybe one of those....after dark still seeing small mullet and a few spots....still have big crowds down and around....alot of walkers after dark.....come one down and join us....

Also note the King Mackerel Tournament starts Sunrise on Friday...and runs till sunset on Sunday August 9th.....the cost is $25 to join ....for more Details visit 2009 Tournament INFO *We caught one king today and lost one so far....

7/13....Monday...Monday...it surly feels like a Monday...No really with the exception of the occasional rain showers its not so bad out there....the water is clear....and the pier is almost empty....lots of bait running through...wouldn't be surprised to see some big fish later today..... I have been able to get a little computer work done so I'm not going to complain about the rain......

Other things for you to know....We are off to a good start on Registration on the King Tournament and I am ready to start Registration on the 5th Annual Mike Martin Tournament....The first 25 who Pre-Registers for all 10 Categories will Receive a Free T-Shirt...and they look awesome ....I also have 200 raffle tickets printed up for a chance at a stainless steel gas grill a 2010 Season Pass or a rod and reel Combo. Tickets are $5 a chance. Good Luck.

7/14.....Kings are around 4 today 1 yesterday.....

Look who else has caught the fishing bug....

7/15.....Four more kings today and three big spanish......one guy out there has a bucket full of spots.....fish are around where are you..... the tournament is on..... so far Garrison is leading and Gene is in 2nd.....

The guys didn't want me to post.....afraid they would have to much company tomorrow.....so I will also add I heard they caught a tarpon down at SeaView today....

7/16....I cant keep up...12 1/2 kings today see bragging for pictures....Congrats to Adolfo for limiting out....

I have updated the records page you can go there to see a complete listing on who and what weights.....lots of spanish right before dark.

I like a minute to do a little bragging of my own.....we had 4 kids king fishing today and all but one caught a king and the one who didn't did alot of the gaffing to my understanding he is 5/5 on the gaffing Congrats to Garrison and each of the kids.....May I introduce you to the next generation of king fisherman and gaffers

Garrison at the Gaff, Garrison gaffing Brandon's king, Tyler with his first king and Carson with his first king
what a great day for the kids.

7/17.....More wind today water not as clear....2 kings so far (3pm now) ....maybe more to come....still seeing a few spots during the day and after dark....still seeing some blues and spanish.....lots of bait running past the pier....looks to be a good weekend...come on down....

7/19....We had a bunch of spots yesterday and last night ....not so many today it seems......no kings yesterday ....lost one close to the pier it came in green....I hear they have two on as a type.....today has been slower all the way around....kinda nice once in a while so I can pretend to get something done you know...

ok I also want to tell you I'm trying to gather door prizes for our Mike Martin Fishing Tournament...so far its going a little slow....but I haven't given up.....I would like to send a special shout out to Mike Clark from "Wild Wing Cafe".....the donations you sent are great.....Thank you so much for that.....Any of you guys and gals out there reading this make sure you folks stop by and visit and let him know how much its appreciated.

7/26....The weather has been beautiful ....although it seem lately we have been getting the late afternoon thunder showers.....they don't usually last all that long .....so don't let that run you off.......still seeing a mixed bag of fish....lets see there have been .....flounder, spots, mullet, spanish, blues, lizard fish, pompano, ...you know the usual summertime mix.....so bring a bathing suit and plenty of SPF30 so you can go down and cool off and then come back up and reapply the sunscreen.....

Something else you might be interested in .....we did land a big king on Saturday a 29 lb'er by Wes ...but not to worry he didn't want in the Tournament so all you have to beat is the 24.5 lb one to win the king Tournament......Also mark your calendars the king fisherman have been asking, begging, pleading ,whinning.....call it what you will ........about permission to fish all night for Tarpon .....Well ...Permission granted.....it will be on Wednesday August 5th .....there's a full moon that night....so here's your chance boys and girls don't miss it......might not get another one till next year....
